Jean Echenoz, winner of many awards, is one of the most important writers in contemporary French literary world. In his earlier stage, he created works making use of all types of conventional literature styles, playing games with their rules. Au Piano is his first novel after he gave up his game-playing style, in which he depicts the sad destiny of people living in the modern world by a ghost story of fantasy. However, his characteristic satire and humor keep undercutting the tragedy of the novel, while some names of places with historical and cultural implications give the novel a strong sense of nostalgia.
