After the Anglo-Saxons were converted to Christianity in the seventh century, Germanic tradition was still strong in England. Old English literature, including religious literature, reflects prominently this influence. The Old English poem Genesis, based on Genesis, is an important religious poem. However, the poet, in his rewriting, considerably revises the biblical story in almost every aspect from details, plot, to characterization and, in so doing, consciously and unconsciously brings his Germanic values into the poem. His revision reveals that Germanic culture had entered the mainstream ideology and maintained a dynamic relation of co-existence and assimilation with Christianity.
