The A/O/A direct-flow nitrogen removal process was used for treatment of wastewater from coking plants, and the removal efficiencies of COD and NH4^+ -N were investigated. The 4-month continuous-flow test results show that when the influent COD and NH4^+ -N are 2 470 mg/L and 102 mg/L, their effluent concentrations decrease to 120 mg/L and 10 mg/L respectively, meeting the secondary class criteria specified in Integrated Standard of Wastewater Discharge. Compared to the currently used A2O2 technique, the process consumes half the power and occupies one third of the space due to non-reflux. The pre-anaerobic tank reduces organic load of the aerobic phase and improves COD removal efficiency. The effluent diversion provides sufficient carbon source for denitrification in anoxic tank, avoiding the extra cost for adding methanol.
