Automatic Rotation of the Cutting Tool at the Cusp in an Economical NC System

A perfect numerical control system should be capable of automatically locating the cutting tool in the correct initial position at the cusp of two curves. A method of achieving automatic rotation of the cutting tool at the cusp is described and several important problems in a 2-axes NC system, such as the determination whether the cutting tool should be rotated or not and the moving direction of the rotation arc, the directions of the beginning and finishing points of the arc, the calculation of the coordinates of these points, have been solved. The algorithm described is simple and suitable for a numerical control system of the economical type.
