This paper presents the key technologies of omnidirectional barcode laser scanners. The spatial distribution of optimal scan pattern and its generating, the spatial distribution and propagation characteristics of scanning laser beam produced by a semiconductor laser diode, the vignetting characterisitic of optical collection system and its corresponding optimal design to assure a relatively even collection across each of the scan lines, a novel optical automatic gain control method to attain a constant collection over a large working depth, the principle and implementation of high speed decoder employing high speed digital signal processor(DSP) are described in details.
