Based on the premise that social stratification exists objectively, this paper aims to study the necessity of the influence of mass media on residents in small cities and towns participating in physical exercises from the perspective of social stratification. By means of literature review, questionnaire and mathematical statistics, this paper studies the influence of mass media on residents in small cities and towns participating in physical exercises. The results show that besides the item of “little influence” that there is no remarkable difference among various social strata, there are significant differences in other items of "big influence" ,"influence" and "no impact". After coming to the conclusion that mass media manifest its biological nature in function, its material nature in form and its lopsided nature in position, the authors of this paper propose that mass media has three major means of impacts on residents from different social classes participating in physical exercise. The impact on upper class residents is through appealing ; the impact on mid-upper class and middle class residents is through penetration inducement; and the impact on lower and mid-lower class residents is through mobilization.
