张裕钊因会试得主考官曾国藩赞赏而结成师生之谊,成为"军中秘书"。张作文作诗皆受曾影响。吴汝纶也因科举而得曾国藩赏识,留用曾府,起草奏疏,影响最大。科场不利的黎庶昌得曾国藩提拔,"教以作文之法",成为桐城派一流作家。薛福成因《上曾侯相书》而得曾氏重用。薛文介绍西方风土人情,开拓了桐城派散文新境界,堪称现代散文之先声。

Zhang Yuzhao,due to his performance in the metropalitan examination,was admired by Zen Guofan,chief examiner and Zhang Yuzhao became his student and served as his military secretary. Wu Rulun due to his performance in the imperial examination was appreciated by Zeng Guofan,who helped draft memorials to the emperor. Li Shuchang,who failed in the imperial examination,was also promo- ted by Zeng Guofan who later taught him writing skills and Li Shuchang became a top writer of Tong Cheng School. Xue Fucheng was promoted by Zeng Guofan because he wrote＂the Memorial to Prime Minister Zeng＂,Xue introduced local customs and practices of Western countries in his writings and became a top proser of Ton Cheng School.
