胡怀琛的现代小诗研究,较同时期其他人的研究更为系统更为全面。他关于现代小诗与中国传统诗歌的渊源、以及现代小诗与传统诗词互换的观念,曾在当时新旧文学阵营中产生过广泛的影响,并引起较大争议。今天,当"五四"文学革命的硝烟消散殆尽,当我们力图从二元对立式的思维束缚中解脱出来的时候,便会发现其现代小诗研究的独特价值。

Compared with verse studies of his contemporaries, Hu Huaishen＇ s study of modern verse is more systematic and more comprehensive, for his views on the reciprocal change between modern minor verse and traditional Chinese verse as well as their respective origin has exerted an extensive impact in the old and new literary camps and has thus led to much controversy. Nowadays, with the fade-out of the milieu for the ＂May 4^th＂ revolutionary literature, readers are apt to discern the unique value of Hu＇ s studies on modern minor verse when they attempt to shake off the shackle of the thought on binary opposites.
