The research on intra - industry trade has been divided into HIIT and VIIT since the late 20th century. Theoretical research finds that economies of scale and imperfect competition are the causes of HIIT while comparative advantage and perfect competition account for VIIT. Empirical research has proved the relative importance of VIIT and the role of comparative advantage.
