Objective: There has been little research on effects of electroacupuncture (EA) of different acupoints on cardiac sympathetic nerve activity (CSNA). This study investigates the different effects of the EA on cardiac sympathetic cardiovascular response. Methods: Rabbits were punctured at Neiguan (PC 6), Shenmen (HT 7), Zhizheng (SI 7), Taiyuan (LU 9), Sanyinjiao (SP 6) and nonpoint at the same time of injection of posterior pituitrin on eight rabbits, respectively. Heart rate (HR), CSNA and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were measured to evaluate the effects of specific acupoints. Lower frequency (2 Hz) EA was stimulated. Needles were inserted into the skin and its underlying muscles at different bilateralis acupoints of 3-5 mm depth on the body. Results: EA of three acupoints including Neiguan (PC 6), Shenmen (HT 7) and Zhizheng (SI 7) modulated the HR, MAP and CSNA of acute myocardial ischemia (AMI) rabbits but to different degrees. Acupuncture of two other acupoints, Taiyuan (LU 9), Sanyinjiao (SP 6) and n0npoint did not influence the response. The CSNA change from baseline of AMI rabbits increased sharply at the beginning and then decreased. It indicated that there was specificity of the effects of EA of different acupoints, adjusting excitability of autonomic nerve may be the main mechanism of treating AMI bv EA.
