Cristina Garcia's Dreaming in Cuban is a masterpiece in Cuban American literature, and also a classical work in the canon of Hispanic American literature. It relates the diaspora of the three generations in a common Cuban family before and after the Cuban revolution, and their experiences in Cuba and the United States in historical upheavals. Through a multi-angle and multi-layered narrative structure to combine politics, history and human destinies, the text achieves a muhidimensional historical writing by shifting between imagination and reality. This historical narrative deconstructs traditional univocal narration and unidirectional historical discourse. Moreover, women become narrative subjects, which puts an end to the absence of woman voices in traditional historical narratives and subverting patriarchal authority. Both the positions help to prove the imaginativeness of history and patriarchy. The narrative thus functions as a forceful proof of the subjectivity of American minority individuals in historical representation.
