《说苑》与《汉书.艺文志》中"小说家"有着紧密的联系,《说苑》的作者是刘向,"小说家"分类来自于刘向的思想,而且《说苑》的体裁与小说作品极其相似,因此,"小说家"借用"说"作为这一流派的命名,更多的得到了《说苑》等说体文的启示。
