Thea Astley was one of Australia's most celebrated women writers. She was the only Australian woman novelist of her generation to have won success throughout the 1960s and 70s, when the literary world was heavily male dominated. She mainly wrote male characters in her novels, which featured the mordant irony of her gaze on Australian society by the portrayal of social outsiders and misfits. This paper holds that Thea Astley's writing as a man has something to do with the then society. And it is this change of writing angle that makes Thea Astley a sharp satirist against the bad social habits.
