The Cognitive Approach to Phonological Analysis

Phonological segments are cognitive and they are products of mind. Cognitive phonology manifests the correspondences between sound and morphological sequences in mind. There must be some relationship between the cognitive structures that are phonological representations and the physical cues to which they are tied. The phoneme sehematizes phonetic imagery, profiling only what is common to all instances of usage of a consonant or a vowel. The cognitive approach would suggest that there can be gradients in which a linguistic unit may more or less resemble a phoneme or a syllabic morpheme. In such an intermediate case, its meaning may provide background or ancillary information that supports the foregrounded information of a full, prototypical morpheme.
