A Cognitive Approach to the Transitivity of the English Mid-verb

传统语法无法解决英语中动词及物性问题。本文试图运用认知语言学的构式语法理论和转喻理论来揭示英语中动词及物性的实质。本文通过探讨中动词与中动构式的关系，分析指出：中动词在认知里本来具有及物性，该及物性在中动构式形成过程中受到转喻迁移而降低或隐含，因而在形式上表现为低及物性或不及物性。认识英语中动词及物性的实质具有重要意义。

The problem of the transitivity of English mid-verbs cannot be solved in traditional grammar. This paper attempts to explore the nature of the English mid-verb in the light of constructional grammar and metonymie theory from cognitive linguistics. A tentative conclusion is thereby obtained that the mid-verb has intrinsic transitivity, but owing to the metonymie shift in the formation of the mid-construction,the transitivity is reduced or made implicit and therefore assumes the form of low transitivity or intransitivity. The insight into the nature of the transitivity of the English mid-verb is of vital importance.
