Socialism Must Be Adhered to and Kept up in Reform and Opening up

30年的历史经验告诉我们,改革开放必须坚持和发展社会主义。坚持社会主义,就是坚持科学社会主义的基本原则,只有社会主义才能救中国;发展社会主义,就是根据我国实际和时代特征赋予其鲜明的中国特色,高举中国特色社会主义伟大旗帜,开辟中国特色社会主义道路,只有中国特色社会主义才能发展中国。改革开放必须旗帜鲜明地反对两种错误倾向。

30 years’ historical experience tells us that we must uphold and develop socialism for our country’s reform and opening-up. Adhering to socialism is to persist in the basic principles of scientific socialism and socialism is the only way to save China; to develop socialism is to give it distinct Chinese characteristics in the light of the specific conditions in our country and the characteristics of the time. We should hold high the great banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics and open up the road to socialism with Chi-nese characteristics. We must object to two kinds of wrong inclinations unequivocally in reform and opening -up.
