On the Transformation of Word Meaning of the "Shandow Play"

"影戏"一词的含义在我国历史上数有变化:其初始意义是指称我国民间的一种特殊的戏剧艺术,即今人所谓的"皮影戏";入明以后,"影戏"除继续沿用宋元时期的初始意义外;其含义也发生变化:一方面是其指称范围逐渐扩大,一些与"弄影"有关的艺术如走马灯、西洋景、电影等也被称为影戏,另一方面则是在民间产生了一些对于影戏的别称。

The meaning of ＂shadow play＂ has changed throughout Chinese history. Originally,it referred to a unique drama called ＂pi Yingxi＂, The word mearing of ＂shadow play＂ has changed since the Ming Dynasty,which,on the one hand, covered all the art forms related to play shadows, including zoumadeng,xiyangging and movie;on the other hand, alternative names for shadow play has come into being.
