According to the concept of "splitting" and "replacement" in psychoanalysis and postmodem psychoanalysis theory, Catherine Eamshaw, the heroine in Wuthering Heights , actually died by her pursuing both ideal and realistic love, which were equal in confrontation strength and tore her violently. The traditional criticism, which overstates the ideal part of Catherine's love, reflects writers' and readers' habit of placing ideal over reality safely in literature.
