A Hand.rid of Dust, the fourth novel of Evelyn Waugh, shows a picture of absurd society which has lost its ethic values in the early 20th century. When the transcendental religious ideal affording the justice of capitalist ethics has broken, individual cannot ethically achieve the self-realization. One＇ s inner need and ethic desire tend to be a “blank zero” historically. The existing idea of ethics no longer provides a meaningful life so that people cannot help but live alone. This cultural emotion becomes a start for the post-modern ethics.
