As a “late romantic”, Beckett is a “linguistic performer” of “inane words”. His unwording resists language and even seeks to go beyond it by subtractions and erosion, on a via negative, hence a demonstration of the inescapability of language. The literature of the unword based on this idea of language is lucidly anti-literary; it gives voice and visibility to the irreducible tension within language, and presents the aporia of expression and that of language as the aporias of human beings and the artist. In short, Beckett' s unwording is both an interrogation of language through language and a valorization of the presence of language, thus an innovative creation of meaning.
