沙威的形象具有深刻的二重性。首先,在于犯罪与法权的二重性决定的走狗与社会治安卫士的重合身份。其次,在于他有着善良的本性和扭曲后的丑恶结合在一起的分裂气质。这既由于童年的不幸,更由于等级观念的毒害。第三,在于高超的职业能力、良好的职业道德与"法权至上观"这一盲目信仰的错误引导,这使他的行为产生了差之毫厘,谬以千里的结果。他的自杀是内心剧烈矛盾冲突的结果,并昭示了人道主义的胜利。
