Ernest Hemingway is one of the most outstanding writers of American literature. Under the back-ground of well-decorated diction and psychological depiction prevailing in the 19th century and the beginning of 20th century, Hemingway' s unique iceberg style has brought about a creative idea to American literature. This writing style emphasizes on presenting one-eighth of the “iceberg” to the readers, while hiding the other seven-eighths part of the “iceberg” which is usually the theme of the story. Iceberg style is totally revealed in Hemingway' short stories through the stories' language, characterization and structure. It not only exerted significant influence on Hemingway' s contemporaries, but also on the following generations' study and research on iceberg theory.
