A Semantic Analysis of English-Chinese Puns——A Study Based on the Data from Talk Show

pun和双关作为英汉两种语言中有效的修辞手段,倍受学者们的关注。近年来,对于英汉双关的研究,大多集中于对其结构形式、语用功能和美学功能的讨论。相比之下,对于英汉双关的语义研究却稍显薄弱。鉴于此,本文首先从语义透明度的视角,把pun和双关分为三类:透明pun/双关、半透明pun/双关和不透明pun/双关,然后分别探讨了这三种类型的各自的语义特点。

Puns in English and Chinese, as effective rhetorical devices, have attracted much attention of various scholars. When it comes to the classification either English or Chinese puns, opinions vary and each scholar has made his or her own contribution. This paper tries to classify puns into three types on the basis of the transparency of the multiple meanings, namely, transparent puns, semitransparent puns and opaque puns. Furthermore, the semantic characteristics of each type are also explored.
