Tradition vs. modernization Zhang Jian in the early modernization of Chinese education

清末状元张謇在家乡南通"办实业、兴教育、举公益",成就卓越,惠泽时人与后代,被誉为中国早期现代化的先驱。作为中国传统教育培养出来的精英,张謇对中国的优秀教育传统给予了充分的肯定与继承,同时又以开放的心态拥抱现代性。张謇"会通古今,兼具中西"的教育思想和教育实践,体现了他在传统与现代之间所进行的融合与选择。他的经验对于当前我国的教育问题有着重要的参考和启示价值。

Zhang Jian, Number One Scholar of the late Qing Dynasty, had worked hard establishing industries, running schools and promoting commonweal in his hometown Nantong City, and he won the fame as the trailblazer of the early modernization of China by his splendid achievements. As an erudite scholar trained by Chinese traditional education, Zhang Jian valued and inherited the best part of Chinese traditions, but at the same time he actively accepted modernity with open mind. His ideas and practice of education illustrated his efforts of harmonizing traditions and modernity, which embodied his amalgamation and choice between tradition and modern. His experiences are valuable and inspirational to us when we discuss the problems of the present Chinese education.
