Living in the earthquake belt of Wenchuan, Li, Mao and Beichuan counties, the Qiang people have long mixed with Han and Tibetan peoples of this mountainous area.The region's geographical and historical realities have combined to make it an “Island of Cultural Isolation;” in consequence it is, today, the richest and most resilient region on the fringes of the Chinese landmass in terms of living ethnic traditional culture.
