Lin Yutang's Interpretation of and Contribution to Confucianism

林语堂十分欣赏儒家的"仁爱"思想,同时又非常推崇老、庄的淳朴与率性,这使他常常自觉不自觉地用道家的眼光来观照儒家,使儒家思想糅合了道家的异质基因。林语堂以道家来阐释儒家元典,来看待孔子其人其事,从而把儒家思想从禁锢人性的桎梏中解放出来,使儒家思想更富人情、人性。

Lin Yu-tang highly appreciated the Confucianist idea of humanity and benevolence; meanwhile he had great esteem for the simplicity and freedom of Taoism. Thus he often consciously or unconsciously viewed Confucianism with the eyes of a Taoist and his understanding of Confucianism blended with the heterogeneous Taoist elements. His interpretation of Confucian canons and his treatment of Confucius with a Taoist view freed Confucianism from shackles restricting humanity and made Confucianism more human.
