This thesis mainly discusses the Southem American female writer Katherine Anne Porter and some of her short stories, in which female characters play a dominant role. Through a feminist study of her female characters, this thesis attempts to establish her position as an early feminist writer and ascertain her outstanding achievements in female writing. Besides her commonly acknowledged writing techniques, here the author would give prominence to her subject matters, which invariably focus on the conflicts between female illusions and the real, patriarchal world, their rebellion to the othemess imposed on their mind, and their self awareness which is often developed into a practical self-realization.
