Ten Years of Painstaking Work to Make Barren Hills Green

There was a total soil loss area of 190 thousand hm_(2) in Xingguo county, annual soil loss amounting to 11 million tons. The county was listed as a key soil loss harnessing area in 1983. During the past more than 10 years, many soil-conserving measures had been taken, including planting trees 134600 hm2, growing grass 6600 hm2, digging water channel 43 thousand km, and vegetation coverage increased from 28. 7% to 72. 2%, reducing soil loss area by 143300 hm2. Soil-conserving measures had generated great benefits: grain output increased annually, average grain possessed per farmer was up to 329 kg, per capita income 1668 yuan. These achievements were due to painstaking work, scientific hamessming, good management measures, and investment in science and technology.
