Pragmatic Functions of Hedges Analyzed from the Perspective of Pragmatic Principles

言语交际中存在着大量的模糊限制语,主要分为变动型模糊限制语和缓和型模糊限制语。合作原则、礼貌原则和关联原则与模糊限制语有密切的关系。交际中使用模糊限制语能使话语变得模糊,在特定语境下模糊限制语具有独特的语用功能:可以提高语言表达的准确性;可以增强语言表达的灵活性和得体性;可以使语言表达更含蓄、委婉、礼貌;可以减轻说话人的责任,具有自我保护功能;可以弥补说话人知识的缺陷,顾全职业面子。

In verbal communication, there are many hedges, mainly consisting of Approximators and Shields. Using hedges in verbal communication can make the discourse fuzzy and has the unique pragmatic functions in specific contexts. From the perspectives of Cooperative Principle, Politeness Principle and Principle of Relevance, this paper points out the pragmatic functions of hedges ： enhancing the correctness of language; strengthening the flexibility and properness of language ; making language more polite ; for self- protection ; making up for linguistic inadequacy to save face.
