In the 17th century, successful trade with the Far East resulted in expansion of the western harbor cities. The transforming of the agricultural landscape into a ‘chain' of new exclusive highly maintained garden and park areas with impressive villas and estates resulted in new sustainable manmade landscapes. Polders with ingenious water systems, controlled by windmills, dikes and canals are one of the most famous examples of manmade Dutch landscapes. With examples of the new estates, this article introduced the new perspectives in which recreation and residential areas are linked together to create synergy for the landscape, the nature and the human consumer.
