Modernity has been haunted by a myth of transparency. Yet in the extreme exploration of the expressive potentiality of transparency, architecture also suffers in missing many other qualities like subtlety, abundance and specificity. Quite different from this quality, translucency displays a character of ambiguity and uncertainty, or a textured transparency. This paper pays its attention to this quality of material in its space features as well as cultural connotation. It also studies how it affects the way architecture communicates with people from the perspectives of psychological and aesthetic mechanism. If the chase for transparency reflects the ideal and aesthetic goal of the modernist, the questioning of this quality and excavation of translucency' s expressivity coincide with and echo the variety, complexity and ambiguity of the "post-modern" society and culture.
