In 2005, archaeologists carried out drilling and trial excavation on the Huangtugang site in Suizhou City, Hubei Province. The site contains rich cultural deposits, which cover a long period of time and belong mainly to the Neolithic Age. On the site remains a sub-oval surrounding ditch of Neolithic times, with the periphery measuring about 316m (N to S) and 235m (W to E) . It surrounds an area of 57,120 sq m, and is 15-20 m in average width, 2.5--3 m in average depth and over 3.8 m in the maximum depth. The unearthed objects from the ditch are all pottery utensils. Its formation must go back to the time no later than the late Qujialing culture, and it must have functioned for defense down to the early Shijiahe culture.
