Urban Sub-areas from the Perspective of Space

Cities seem to have some kind of area structure, usually distinguished in terms of land use types, socio-economic variables, physical appearance or historical and cultural characteristics. Is there any pos- sibility that urban sub-areas could in general be differentiated from the spatial perspective？ What is the nature of boundaries between sub-areas in terms of space？ This paper goes through different literatures on defining ur- ban sub-areas and their function in shaping cities, and then discusses the studies of urban sub-areas in the context of the space syntax movement.
