Contemporary British writer Caryl Phillips's historical narrative rewrites the colonial history shaped by colonizers' ideology from the perspective of the colonized. It reveals another truth, thereby giving voice to the once silenced 'Other'. As a whole, his works constitute a postcolonial poetics characterized by fluidity, ambivalence, heterogeneity, and subversion. His autobiographical short story 'Growing Pains' sketches in very simple lines an immigrant writer's life in 28 years and his search for identity. It also indicates that the construction of self in a postcolonial context is a result of conflict and negotiation between history and present. This will always be a dynamic process, which is a helpless and forced choice, but also breeds vigor, vitality and hope.
