The Conceptual Metaphors of Darkness——A Corpus-Based Comparative Study Between English and Chinese

本研究从认知语言学的角度,系统地考察了英汉语中的"黑暗"概念隐喻。研究表明,英汉两种语言共享了"黑暗"概念的大部分隐喻投射,而少部分投射则为各自所独有,表现出一种"大同小异、同异并存"的关系,反映了两个民族在思维层面上存在的同一性及差异性。"黑暗"概念的隐喻投射范围远比De ignan所归纳的要宽广得多。在英语中,"黑暗"概念和"光明"概念的隐喻投射只有部分对应,分布并不均衡,反映了英语民族倾向于用黑暗来理解更多的抽象概念;相比之下,汉语中"黑暗"和"光明"概念的隐喻投射分布存在着较大的对称性,"光明"和"黑暗"都被用来理解数目大致相同的抽象概念。

This article systematically probes into the conceptual metaphors of ＂darkness＂ in English and Chinese from the cognitive linguistic perspective. The result indicates that most of the mappings are shared by English and Chinese while a few of them are unique to either of them, reflecting the commonalities and differences at the thinking level between the two languages. The metaphorical scope of the ＂dark＂ concept is much broader than that generalized by Deignan. In English, only some mappings of the ＂light＂ and ＂dark＂ conceptual metaphors correspond to each other, showing that the metaphorical meanings of the two concepts are unevenly distributed. Compared with English, the metaphorical mappings of the light and dark concept in Chinese are distributed rather evenly, indicating that the two concepts of ＂light＂ and ＂dark＂ are used to understand quite a similar number of abstract concepts in Chinese.
