An Analysis of Yan Fu's Culture Views

严复对中西文化的态度,既"弃"中有"守",又"迎"中有"拒"。对民族危机严重性的感受程度、对社会变革期望值的大小以及对政治改革的满意程度、对西学了解的全面与否,影响着他对中西方文化取舍的内容、择取的多少、背弃的程度。严复对中西文化弃守与迎拒的行为本身,具有重要的历史意义。

Yan Fu＇s attitude toward original Chinese culture is not to abandon all but to hold some, and toward the western culture is not to greet all but to resist in a certain sense. What and how much will he chose and abandon depends on the seriousness of the national crisis he is aware of and his expectations of social change, as well as the degree of his satisfaction with the political reform and the level of the understanding of Western culture. Such an action as to abandon and resist itself is of great significance historically.
