The activity and quantity of natural killer cell (NK) were measured in the peripheral blood of 25 patients with head and neck carcinoma. Fiveteen patients had their tumors resected. Three weeks after operation, the activity and quantity of NK cells were examinaed again, and compared with that in normal control. The results showed that: (1) The activity and quantity of NK cells in patients were lower than that in the control (P<0.01) . (2) The activity and quantity of NK cells increased in operated patients compared to those in patients before operation (P<0. 05). So tumor resection was helpful to increase the activity and quantity of NK cells in the patient and played an important role in removing the suppression of tumor to the body. (3) There was a relationship between the activity of NK cells and the tumor stages, the activity of NK cells in patients with advanced stage cancer were lower than that of early stage. It suggested that the activity of NK cells were reduced with the growth of tumor. (4) There didn't exist a marked relationship between the activity and quantity of NK cells (r=0. 344, P>0. 05 ). The results revealed that examination of the activity of NK cells was more improtant than measuring the quantity of NK cells in the patients.
