Recently, the contamination of heavy metals is various and complicated in water. In order to study the mechanism of the joint toxic effects of heavy metals,Daphnia magna was chosed as a testing organism, and the superoxide dismutase (SOD) was used as a biomarker to study the joint toxic effects of Cd and Zn. The results demonstrates that the SOD activity varies with the increase of exposure time, first increase and then decrease for the co-exposure as well as individual exposure of Cd and Zn. Cd and Zn show antagonistic effects on the SOD activity for co-exposure situations. So SOD is a sensitive parameter to estimate the joint toxicity of Cd and Zn on aquatic organisms.
