摘要
奥尼尔的剧作《毛猿》主人公扬克的疯癫形象引起不少读者的困惑和思索,长期以来被贴上现代工业化社会异化人群的标签。实际上,扬克看似发疯的言行背后隐藏着一个社会底层人对自由的渴望和对回归人性的期盼。扬克的疯癫透过水、监狱等意象,以及疯子被展示、疯子与自恋等方面与福柯的"疯癫"视点形成映照。对扬克的疯癫解读有助于加深理解奥尼尔剧作体现出的现代悲剧意识。
Yank, the protagonist in O'Neill's The Hairy Ape, has long aroused perplexity and deliberation among readers. Although commonly labeled as an "alienated worker" in the industrialized society, Yank displays behind his mad deeds a desire for freedom and expectation for true human nature. Through an analysis of the images of water and jail, the prohibition and narcissism of the madman, the present paper claims that Yank's madness reflects Foucauh' s viewpoint on madness. The interpretation of Yank's madness may bring about a better understanding of the tragic theme in O'Neill's plays.
