Mainly based on Halliday's theoretical framework of interpersonal meaning, the paper focuses on the comparison of interpersonal meaning between Chinese and English editorials, which takes the modality system as the core of the study. The comparison shows that modal verbs and metaphor of mood are distributed unevenly in Chinese and English editorials. There are more high value modal verbs distributed in the Chinese editorials than those in English editorials. Meanwhile, metaphor of mood tends to be subjective implicit and Objective explicit in English discourse, but be subjective explicit and objective implicit in Chinese, which correlates to the social and cultural differences.
