The experiment examined the modality effect in false memory in the DRM paradigm. We utilized the 3-factor mixed design and explored the influence of repetition on the modality effect in false recognition with the method of SDT. We found in our experiment that 1 )there were different modality effects in false memory between the Chinese lists and the English lists, namely, the false recognition following visual study was greater than following auditory study; 2) Repetition played a dissociated role in false recognition in visual study and auditory study, which showed that repetition reduced the false recognition in visual study, but enhanced it in auditory study; 3) the signal detection analysis suggested that the increased susceptibility to false recognition in auditory study after repetition stemmed from a combination of increased sensitivity to gist information and more lenient retrieval criteria; and the sharp reduction of false memory in visual study after repetition was attributed to more dependence on item-specific information than gist information.
