Gaps in tropical forest ecosystems are important regeneration niches for many tree species. Gap disturbance regimes, gap phase regeneration and tree species diversity in relation to gaps in a tropical montane rain forest of Hainan island were analyzed in this paper. The main results of this study were as follows : 1 ) Most of the gaps were made by 2 - 3 gap makers, resulting from snapping and uprooting after strong winds ; 2) The gap surrounding trees (GST) had more probabilities to become gap makers than the canopy trees in the closed stand; 3 ) The average, maximum and minimum size of expanded gap (EG) and canopy gap (CG) in the forest were 257 and 113m^2, 540 and 353m^2 , and 101 and 26m^2, respectively; 4) Gap size affected the richness and density of seedlings and saplings significantly but not on big trees; 5 ) The species richness and Shannon-Wienner diversity index in each gap increased with the gap size, while the species numbers per m^2 in each gap and the species per stem in each gap decreased with the gap size.
