The benefits effects of regular physical activity (PA) have been well established. Previous studies have shown that many chronic diseases, including coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, stroke, osteoporosis, and certain cancers are closely related to the lack of regular PA. Given this, public guidelines for PA have been released from authorities and numerous research efforts have been put into developing effective prevention interventions. The present paper summarizes the research evidence linking PA and health outcomes, measurement issues in PA studies, intervention efforts into promoting active lifestyle, and finally highlights the implications for future research in China.
