Religious studies on the striking features-big blind and protrudent eyes and kneel sitting gesture-of the sculptures from the Sanxingdui and Jinsha cites unearthed in Sichuan indicate that the origin of primitive pictographic Chinese character "Shu" is not "silkworm in hollyhock" as explained by Xu Shen in his Origin of Chinese Characters, but the religious system for praying and sacrificing offerings to gods and ancestors. The primitive pictographic Chinese character "Shu" should be created by people in the Shang Dynasty who were familiar with the ancient Shu religious rites in which the sculptures of witches and gods have big, protrudent but blind eyes and are all on their kneels. The character "Shu" is the most concise description of these features of the sculptures. Such a conclusion lends support to the verification of the ruins of Sanxingdui culture as part of ancient Shu culture.
