"Foreignization" and Translation Qualities

"异化"与"归化"作为翻译策略并无优劣之分,两者各有千秋,也各有短长。语言的多元性和语言文化的差异性否定了翻译的绝对性。所以,过分强调"异化"或"归化"都有失偏颇。在文学翻译中,语言晦涩,佶屈聱牙的译文乏善可陈。可读性和文学性才是检验文学翻译质量和翻译效果的天平。

As a translation strategy, it is hard to say foreignization is superior to domestication, or vice versa. Both of them have their own strong points and weak ones. The multi - dimensionality of language and the cultural differences it encodes make it impossible to achieve absolute equivalence in literary translation. Not any translated literary text with obscure words is worth praising, be it by means of foreignization, domestication or whatever. The readability is the touchstone to inspect the quality of literary translation.
