Carson McCuller' s representative work The Ballad of the Sad Cafe embodies typical theme of loneliness, and the loneliness is to a large extent modernist. The pattern of love between lovers and the process of pursuing and losing love greatly manifest this theme. Modern man' s love is a one-dimensional, short-lasted, alienated and absurd experience, for the purpose of maintaining one' s broken beliefs. It is absolutely egocentric. As a result, the roles of lover and the beloved on one person can not overlap, the splitting role leads any attempt of breaking loneliness through love to total failure, and further deepens the original loneliness. This paper tends to achieve a better understanding of the theme of this novel through the analysis of the alienated love among the characters and the relationship between love and modernist loneliness.
