As the only Afro-American female writer who has received the Nobel Prize for Literature, Toni Morrison has drawn world-wide attention. Each of her novels has received considerable critical studies, but Tar Baby is perhaps the least written about and the most controversial work. This paper, however, argues that it is very significant for Morrison to set her story of Tar baby in different places such as the Caribbean Isle des Chevaliers, Paris, New York and Eloe. The space strategy adopted in this postcolonial novel plays a very important role for black characters to resist a fixed, essential identity and search for a mobile black cultural identity instead.
