Before Edgar Allan Poe inaugurated a new genre in the mid 19th century with his "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" that marks the birth of modern detective story, detective-story-factors have existed in Western literature. The present author studies resemblances and interrelations between Oedipus Tyrannus and "The Murders in the rue Morgue," pointing out that these factors are essential to the crime-detection-punishment paradigm shared by many literary works, no matter if they are labeled as a detective story or not. Such a paradigm serves as an appetizer to whet the reader' s curiosity to peruse his book. However, it is hoped that in the process of reading he is entertained and morally or otherwise advised.
