A Brief Probe into Zhang Zhidong as a Model of "Confucian of Virtue" in Late Qing Dynasty

儒家标榜的"君子儒"形象在晚清张之洞这位封疆大吏、儒臣身上得到了很好的表征,通观张之洞修身治国思想,可以从他的力辟公羊、调和汉宋、学兼中西、经世务实等方面得到佐证,他的学术宗旨和治世理念成为后世效法的楷模,而他本人,也应成为千百年来"内圣外王"的又一个大践行者。

The image of ＂Confucian of virtue＂ is well illustrated in Zhang Zhidong, a great Confucian with a number of high-rank government positions in late Qing Dynasty. His thought of governance and self-rule is fully presented in several aspects, such as his deep inquiry into the school of ＂Gongyang＂, his reconcilement of Han and Song Confucians, his objective attitude to both Chinese and Western learning and his pragmatic strategy. His academic tenet, idea of governance and himself as a master of ＂being internal saint so as to govern the outer world benevolently＂, has surely become a model for the later generations.
