"Mr. Science" and the Realism Literature Theory of the May 4th Movement

"科学"是五四新文学运动最大的历史语境。出于对"赛先生"的崇拜,五四新文学家一方面从众多的西方文学流派中,选择了现实主义文学理论作为新文学发展的方向,另一方面又从狭隘地"科学实证"角度来解读19世纪欧洲现实主义文学,夸大了"写实主义文学"与"赛先生"之间的关系,最终导致了对19世纪欧洲现实主义文学的误读。这种误读也使得五四现实主义文学理论本身存在着巨大的缺陷。

Science constitutes the biggest historical context for the May 4th New Literature Movement.Out of the worship of Mr.Science,writers at that time chose realism as their theoretical basis.However,they confined their interpretation of the European realism literatures of the 19th Century within the perspective of empirical science and overstated the role of Mr.Science,which led to a misunderstanding of those literatures,and resulted in a historical deficiency.
